POWER OF LOVE – LIVE
AT THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL
Deee-Lite
perform “Power of Love” in Switzerland in July of 1991 during their first world
tour. They ended up doing live world tours and several smaller club tours. The
record company refused to promote their secoind album Infinity Within and no
tour was done except a few live gigs with live vocals and one with live musicians
as well.A friend who saw them at the Zatopke Club in south London said it was
out of this world. Techno meets burlesque/go-go, sexy franch bohemian, pinup
poses, space ships, sampladelic nd funkadelia. Psychic Power! I would literally

If you are not familiar with their story, Deee-Lite
was a New York dance act from New York City who managed to break into the
mainstream with their mega funk inspired hit Groove Is In The Heart. The
trio consisted of Ukrainian born Supa DJ Dmitry Brill, Tokyo native „Jungle
DJ“Towa Tei and the delectable and delicious front woman Lady Miss Kier who was
originally from Pittsburg PA. Some writers have erroneously referred to
Deee-Lite as a „One Hit Wonder“band and never bothered to discover
what they were all
about. Deee-Lite never aspired to be the next big pop thing in the
industry. They came from the underground club scene of DJ‘s,
bohemians, artists, club kids and drag queens. They had been writing music and
performing since 1986. Kier and Dmitry first met in 1982. They immediately
fell in love and eventually started Deee-Lite. They did their first live
show in 1987 and Towa Tei joined them soon after he heard Dmitry DJ-ing at
the Afroshine nightclub in New York. That‘s how the greatest
band in the world came
to be.
In 1989, Deee-Lite had become known in the underground
club scene where they played gigs frequently and their shows soon became
extremely popular. It was at one of those shows where they were discovered
by Bill Coleman who eventually became their manager. A bidding war soon
started with the record companies and they eventually signed a seven album
deal with Elektra Records.„What
Is Love“was issued
as a promo single to club DJ‘s in 1990, backed by a ditty titled„Groove Is In The
Heart. “ The label
disliked the song and didn‘t think the vocals were strong enough. But
the public thought differently and it became an instant success. Within
weeks it went beyond the dance charts and eventually landed at number 4 on
the US Billboard top 100 where it remained for several weeks. It landed in
number one in several countries including England and Australia. Their
debut album, World Clique was released in August of 1990. It eventually
earned Gold Certification in December of 1990.
Deee-Lite released three more albums in the subsequent
years, two with new material and one remix album in 1996. None of the
albums managed to match the success of World Clique in terms of sales and
chart topping. However, each album has become a cult classic and they still
sell to this day. Deee-Lite‘s main success was on the dance
charts where they had 7 number ones on the Billboard dance chart and countless entries
and number ones in other countries. All in all they had 13 chart entries. Deee-Lite
were way ahead of its time and their style and he group's extravagantly
campy look and irresistibly funky, upbeat songs were a marked contrast to
the generally introverted cool of most hip-hop, and the distinctive vocals
of lead singer Lady Miss Kier--whose 1970s-inspired wardrobe made her an
instant fashion icon--helped set the group apart from the droves of
diva-meets-dance-machine records dominating the club scene.
Part of the appeal of Deee-Lite's music has been its
inclusiveness--Christian Logan Wright wrote in Mademoiselle that "as a
group, they're a festival of individuality; as a band, they're a party
anyone can attend." During their 8 year span, Deee-Lite played at
countless nightclubs and outdoor gigs. They embarked on two world tours where
they played at venues all over the world. In 1991 they were even invited to
play at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and to this
date they are the only dance act to be given that honor. They also won many
awards for their music.
Deee-Lite's mixture of funk, soul, disco, house, and
rap brought together a huge, varied listenership; their mixture of style
and political substance helped make them one of the most influential forces
in dance music in the early 1990s. Lady Miss Kier, Dmitry, and Towa have
all expressed the hope that their music will contribute to positive global
change and Kier has remained philosophical about her group's impact.
"Deee-Lite is not guiding anything," she insisted in Details.
"We're reflecting it. But I can feel something happening right now.
It's like when animals know that there's an earthquake coming and they all
start running out of the forest."
Even though Deee-Lite’s second and third
albums were not as
successful commercially, they are amongst the bands best work, especially
Infinity Within which has been the least favorite album of some of the fans
and other critics. I have to say that it is my favorite album today.. It is
incredible how timeless their music is, especially from the first two albums.
The third one is gem also.
